Tesla Inc., once celebrated by progressives for revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) industry, is now facing mounting attacks across North America and Europe as CEO Elon Musk’s political alignment with former President Donald Trump draws backlash.
During Trump’s second term, Tesla dealerships, factories, and charging stations have become the site of violent protests, including Molotov cocktail attacks, shootings, and arson. The wave of vandalism comes after Musk’s $250 million donation to Trump’s 2024 campaign—making him the ex-president’s largest benefactor—and his increasingly vocal support for right-leaning policies.
Violence Escalates Across the U.S.
Law enforcement agencies are dealing with a string of high-profile incidents targeting Tesla properties:
- In Las Vegas, multiple Tesla vehicles were set on fire outside a service center, with the word “resist” spray-painted on the building. Attackers reportedly used Molotov cocktails and fired rounds into parked cars.
- In Seattle, four Cybertrucks were torched in a Tesla lot earlier this month.
- A man in Oregon allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at a Tesla store, then returned days later to shoot out windows.
- In Colorado, a woman was charged for attacking Tesla dealerships and defacing buildings with the phrase “Nazi cars.”
- Federal agents in South Carolina arrested a man accused of setting fire to Tesla charging stations, reportedly inspired by anti-government and DOGE-related beliefs.
From Left-Wing Icon to Right-Wing Symbol
Tesla’s transition from progressive symbol to conservative lightning rod has been swift. The company initially thrived with a $465 million federal loan under the Obama Administration, helping popularize EVs and break the mold of underpowered, limited-range electric cars.
However, Musk’s purchase of Twitter (now X) and his decision to eliminate content restrictions, a move praised by conservatives, alienated many on the left. His growing association with Trump has further fueled the backlash.
Cybertruck Prices Plummet Amidst Political Fallout
The backlash is hitting Tesla’s bottom line. Used Cybertruck prices have fallen nearly 8% since Trump’s reelection, according to CarGurus, while the broader used car market has remained stable. The Tesla stock surge seen immediately after Trump’s victory has also evaporated, with shares losing all their post-election gains.
Some Tesla owners, eager to distance themselves from the Musk-Trump connection, are resorting to humorous bumper stickers to avoid being targeted. Slogans like “I bought this before we knew Elon was crazy” and “I just wanted an electric car. Sorry guys” have become increasingly common.
As Tesla vehicles become symbols of political division, the company faces mounting challenges from both financial losses and growing hostility.
