Steven Kwan Reflects on Mental Toughness, Breakout Season and Relationship with Guardians Manager Stephen Vogt

Since making his MLB debut in April 2022, Cleveland Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan has become an essential piece of the team’s success. The 27-year-old outfielder has consistently demonstrated elite contact-hitting ability, speed, and defensive prowess. However, his 2024 season elevated him to new heights as he put together a career year, helping the Guardians secure the AL Central title and make a deep postseason run.

Steven Kwan’s Best Season Yet in 2024

Kwan’s 2024 campaign was a testament to his consistency and growth as a player. He finished the season with an impressive .292 batting average, 14 home runs, and 44 RBIs. Not only was he a crucial component of the Guardians’ lineup, but his standout performances earned him his first-ever All-Star selection and his third career Silver Slugger award.

Beyond his individual accolades, Kwan played a vital role in the Guardians’ success as they stormed through the AL Central to clinch the division title. His contributions were pivotal in their playoff run, which saw them battle all the way to the AL Championship Series. Unfortunately, their World Series dreams were cut short by Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees in a heartbreaking defeat. Despite the loss, Kwan’s emergence as a leader and offensive catalyst solidified his standing as one of baseball’s premier outfielders.

Steven Kwan Discusses the Mental Side of Baseball

While Kwan’s physical abilities are evident, he believes that baseball is just as much a mental battle as it is a physical one. Speaking on the “No Agenda” podcast with Nick Adgar, Kwan highlighted the importance of mental resilience in Major League Baseball.

“Baseball obviously needs some talent, but it’s a mental game,” Kwan said. “Look at me, a 5’8″ kinda guy; I get to play next to Aaron Judge. No body type is the same, but the only similarity we have is being solid up here,” he continued, pointing to his head.

Kwan emphasized that baseball is one of the hardest sports mentally because of the frequency of failure.

“Nobody fails as often as we do on a daily basis and is expected to show up the next day and do the same thing. That could beat somebody down,” Kwan said. “You need a tool to be able to filter that and be able to move to the next day. I think that’s why it’s so important [to be mentally strong], because it can manifest into something really nasty down the road if you’re not handling it every day.”

Kwan’s perspective offers insight into what separates great players from the rest. While physical tools and mechanics are crucial, a player’s ability to overcome slumps, handle adversity, and stay focused throughout the grueling 162-game season is what ultimately defines their success.

Kwan’s Praise for Guardians Manager Stephen Vogt

While players like Kwan, José Ramírez, and Josh Naylor were instrumental in Cleveland’s success, much of the credit also belongs to first-year manager Stephen Vogt. The former MLB catcher took over managerial duties in 2024 and immediately won over his clubhouse with his approachable leadership style.

Speaking to former big-league pitcher and two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber, Kwan detailed his admiration for Vogt’s leadership and how he seamlessly fit into the Guardians’ culture.

“He just had incredible feel. He wasn’t the kind of guy that goes, ‘I’m the new manager. This is how things are going to be, and you guys are going to listen,'” Kwan explained. “It’s like, ‘Hey, guys, we got something really special here, but we have to make sure we’re on the same page.’ Door is always open kind of guy.”

Kwan further praised Vogt’s ability to create a relaxed yet competitive environment in the clubhouse.

“Having fun, walking around cracking jokes. He played like a couple of years before, so it didn’t feel tacky; it felt genuine,” Kwan said. “He was like one of the guys, as people like to say. Easy to talk to. He had his expectations, but it was a tender style of coaching.”

Vogt’s ability to connect with players, while maintaining high expectations, played a huge role in the Guardians’ success. His seamless transition from player to manager allowed him to relate to his team on a personal level, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and trust.

The Guardians’ Outlook for the 2025 Season

With the 2025 MLB season fast approaching, Cleveland fans have every reason to be optimistic about their team’s chances. The Guardians have established themselves as one of the top teams in the American League, thanks to a combination of young talent and experienced leadership.

Kwan will continue to be a crucial part of their offensive game plan, setting the table at the top of the lineup. His ability to make consistent contact, get on base, and provide stellar defense in left field makes him an invaluable asset.

The Guardians’ core group of players, including Kwan, Ramírez, Naylor, and a strong pitching staff, gives them a solid foundation. However, the key to their success will be how they build upon their 2024 campaign and whether they can take the next step to reach the World Series.

Vogt’s managerial approach will also play a significant role in the team’s trajectory. His ability to keep the clubhouse focused and engaged, while continuing to develop young players, will be instrumental in the Guardians’ pursuit of a championship.

on Steven Kwan Growth and Leadership

Steven Kwan’s rise from an underrated prospect to a premier MLB outfielder is a testament to his hard work, mental strength, and leadership qualities. His standout 2024 season, coupled with his deep understanding of the mental side of baseball, makes him a key figure in the Guardians’ continued pursuit of success.

As Cleveland gears up for the 2025 season, fans can rest assured that Kwan will remain one of the team’s most reliable and impactful players. With Stephen Vogt leading the charge and a talented roster ready to compete, the Guardians are poised to make another strong push for postseason glory.
